Malteser Squares

This Malteser Squares recipe isn’t one I remember from my childhood, so whether it’s a more ‘modern’ traybake or just one that Mummy Traybakes didn’t make until I was older, I’m not sure. However, I think it’s one that definitely deserves a place on my (rather long and expanding) list of favourite traybakes.

I have always loved Maltesers. Especially from a box. Why do they taste better from a box? Or is that just me? Little Miss Traybakes also loves Maltesers and specifically requested that her birthday cake this year be decorated with Maltesers and Smarties. Despite being born in the USA, Little Miss Traybakes is quite the connoisseur of UK and Irish confectionary.

You can buy Maltesers in the US. My local supermarket sometimes sells them and, if I’m prepared to drive a little further, I can definitely buy them from my favourite Boston convenience store where I can also buy Tayto crisps and wheaten bread flour (perfect for my Wheaten Bread recipe). There is also an American equivalent called Whoppers. They aren’t quite the same, with a slightly different texture, and they are definitely sweeter. But I used them for this traybake and they worked well. And didn’t require a special trip into the city. But if you have Maltesers, then use Maltesers.

Another no-bake traybake. And a very straightforward one at that. And another very successful traybake. Malteser Squares. Crunchy, sweet, and chocolatey. What more could you ask for?!

Malteser Squares

Malteser Squares. A no-bake, chocolatey, malty traybake. Crunchy, sweet and very easy to make. Another classic Northern Irish No-Bake Traybake.

Course Dessert, Snack
Servings 12 slices

Ingredients

  • 4 oz or 110g butter
  • 8 oz or 225g chocolate, I used milk
  • 8 oz or 225g Maltesers (Whoppers)
  • 8 oz or 225g Digestives/Graham Crackers, crushed
  • 3 tbsp golden syrup (or honey/maple syrup)
  • 6 oz or 175g white chocolate, to cover

Instructions

  • Place the butter, chocolate and syrup in a saucepan and melt over a low heat.
  • Stir in the crushed digestives (I used my food processor to crush these as I prefer finer crumbs). Set aside around 10 of the Maltesers to crush for decoration and mix the rest of the whole Maltesers in with the digestives and chocolate mixture.
  • Spread into an 8"/20cm square tin. This one was fairly easy to smooth into the tin. Leave to cool.
  • Melt the white chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water and pour over the base. Crush the reserved Maltesers and sprinkle over the top.
